Self Compacting Concrete (SCC)

Self Compacting Concrete is defined as fresh Concrete which flows under its own weight and does not require any external vibrations to undergo compaction.

Material used for Self Compacting Concrete

1.Cement : OPC 43 or OPC 53 can be used.

2.Aggregates : The size of the aggregates used for SCC design is limited to 20mm. If the congested reinforcement is utilized for structure than the aggregate size used can be in the range 10 to 12mm. Well graded aggregates either round or cubical shape are a best choice.
Natural aggregates or manufactured aggregates (M- Sand) with a uniform grade used as a fine aggregate in SCC . The fine aggregates with particle size less than 0.125mm are generally employed.

3.Water : The quality of water used is that of same quality used for reinforced concrete and prestressed concrete construction.

4.Chemical Admixture : Below are the admixture can be used
Ø  VMA : For Stability
Ø  Air Entraining Agents : To improve Freeze-Thaw resistance
Ø  Retarders : To control setting time

5.Mineral Admixtures : Mentioned below are the different mineral admixtures that can be used and their respective properties they provide.

Ø  GGBS : To improve Rheological Properties
Ø  Fly ash : To improve the quality and durability
Ø  Silica Fumes: To improve Mechanical Properties
Ø  Stone Powder: To increase the powder content

Properties of Self Compacting Concrete (SCC)

The three main properties of SCC are :

Ø  Filling Ability : This property reflects that it has the ability to flow under its own weight and fill formwork without any vibrations provided purposely.
Ø  Passing Ability : This Property reflects that it has the ability to pass between congested reinforcement bars or any other obstacles.
Ø  Segregation Resistance :This property reflects its stability that during the mixing and placing it does not segregate or bleed.

Advantages of SCC

Ø  Decreased permeability
Ø  Increase quality, durability and reliability of concrete structure due to better compaction and homogeneity of concrete.
Ø  The SCC construction is faster
Ø  Less noise from vibrators can be avoided
Ø  The concrete is placed with ease, which results in large cost saving
Ø  Improves working condition and productivity of construction

Disadvantages of SCC

Ø  No test yet specified globally for SCC mix design.
Ø  The measurement and monitoring should be more precise.
Ø  The material selection for SCC is more stringent.
Ø  Material cost is much more than any other conventional concrete.
